Challenges of proper intake

For some populations, it is very difficult to receive sufficient vitamin D from foods. The presence of naturally occurring (i.e., not fortified) vitamin D in food is also limited, occurring in relatively significant amounts only in fatty fish and certain fish oils.

Our body's ability to produce vitamin D from sun exposure is dependent upon many factors, including time of day, time of year, geo-location, and skin exposure. Many well-meaning people avoid the sun for various reasons, yet inadvertently may lead to vitamin D deficiency.
